So I've started a new book series (see subject line) written by Jim Butcher.

Apparently there was a TV series based on it, which phased out not long after it took off. Not sure why.

But anywho. The premise is about your stereotypical Private Investigator. He's a smart-ass. Wears a big leather duster coat. Carries a .38 Chief's Special. Has a low-rent office on the cheap side of Chicago.

What's so spectacular about this, you ask?

He also happens to be a freaking wizard.

Yeah.

Now, before you close this thread with ghastly images of Daniel Radcliffe holding his magical wand, I'm going to tell you that The Dresden Files works

It's actually awesome.

I don't normally read fantasy novels. Lord Of the Rings was pretty much as far as I would go. But I picked the first of this series up on a whim, and burned through the next ones in no time at all. This doesn't feel like a fantasy novel.

It has all the attitude of a hardboiled Sam Spade novel in the seamy underbelly of Chicago, plus the wacky twists and turns you'd expect from a day or two in Gandalf's shoes.

Throw in a sprinkling of Star Wars and a bunch of hilarious pop culture references, and you've got The Dresden Files.

If you're a reader, you can't not pick these ones up.

I must admit I have watched every episode of the tv series and I liked it. I can see why some wouldn't but I did.

Are there many books in this series TOI? I'll have to keep my eye out for it when I go to the book shop next. Smile

There's quite a few. 11 out at the moment, with a twelfth coming out in April. Jim Butcher says The Dresden Files has quite a complicated story arc, that he wants to continue for up to at least 23 books.
